Veszprém Castle District

Hilltop ridge of baroque palaces, churches, and bishop's seat

The Vár — Castle District — is a single street running along a long ridge above the Séd valley, with palaces, churches, the bishop's residence, and the heroes' gate at the entrance. It is the heart of historic Veszprém and one of the most atmospheric urban ensembles in western Hungary.

Walk in past the Heroes' Gate, pass the County Hall, and follow the street to the cathedral and bishop's palace at the southern end. The viewpoint at the very end of the ridge — the Erzsébet Look-out — gives a sweeping view over the valley below and the Bakony Hills to the north. Allow at least two hours for a slow walk.

A story
The first Hungarian queen, Gisela of Bavaria — wife of King Stephen I — was crowned in Veszprém Cathedral around the year 1000. The bishopric of Veszprém has therefore historically been called the "queen's bishopric," and the bishops still hold the formal right to crown Hungarian queens whenever there happens to be one.
