In 1934, Hollywood director Robert Flaherty arrives on the neighbouring island to film a documentary. Cripple Billy, an unloved boy from Inis Meáin, is determined to cross the sea and audition. McDonagh's dark comedy is a merciless portrait of a community so cramped and mean-spirited that hope itself becomes an affront — funny and savage in equal measure.
