Kilmalkedar

Kilmalkedar is a complex of early Christian and medieval ruins around a roofless 12th-century Hiberno-Romanesque church a few kilometres beyond Gallarus. The church has the same corbelled stone construction at one end but adds a richly carved Romanesque doorway, a chancel arch, and several centuries of accumulated stonework — a useful contrast to the much earlier Gallarus.

The site holds a remarkable collection of early Christian stones: a complete ogham stone in the churchyard, the so-called "Alphabet Stone" with its incised Latin alphabet (an extreme rarity), and a stone sundial. It is also the start of the Cosán na Naomh — the Saint's Road — the medieval pilgrim route up Mount Brandon. Free, unfenced, atmospheric, and almost always empty.
