St Catherine's Church

1769 neoclassical church where Robert Emmet was executed in 1803; now an arts venue

Address Thomas Street, Dublin 8

St Catherine's Church on Thomas Street is a handsome 1769 neoclassical building that has found a new life as an arts and community venue after years of dereliction. Its historical significance is considerable: the United Irishman leader Robert Emmet was publicly hanged outside its door in 1803, following his failed rebellion.

The restored church hosts exhibitions, concerts, and community events. The facade, with its engaged Doric columns, is one of the finer pieces of 18th-century street architecture in the Liberties.
