Civitella Alfedena is a small medieval village at the southern edge of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park, sitting above Lake Barrea at around 1,110 metres. It is compact enough to walk in ten minutes, but its position — between the lake, the Camosciara reserve, and the Valle di Rose — makes it one of the best bases in the park for wildlife walking.
The village has a wolf museum and a small wolf enclosure run by the park authority, where you can observe Apennine wolves at close range. It is a good primer before heading out into the backcountry, where sightings of wolves, bears, and chamois are always possible but never guaranteed.
The Camosciara — a steep, forested valley with a waterfall at its head — begins a short walk from the village. The Valle di Rose, reached by a longer track east of the Camosciara, is one of the quietest and most rewarding routes in the park for early-morning wildlife.
