Cathedral of Crotone

The Cathedral of Crotone (Cattedrale di Maria Santissima Assunta) is the main church of the city, sitting in the old quarter near the castle. The current building dates largely from the late seventeenth century, though the site has been a place of worship since the early medieval period. The interior is relatively plain but contains some good baroque decorative work and several paintings from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

The cathedral is also the home of the venerated icon of the Madonna di Capocolonna, a Byzantine image housed in a chapel within the church. This icon, said to have been found at Capo Colonna, is the focus of an important annual procession each May in which the image is carried from the cathedral to the cape and back — a ceremony that draws pilgrims from across Calabria.
