The National Archaeological Museum of Crotone (Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Crotone) is one of the better museums in Calabria and genuinely worth the visit for anyone interested in the ancient Greek world. It is housed in a modern building in the city centre, a short walk from the castle.
The collection covers the founding and flowering of ancient Kroton from the eighth century BC through to the Roman period. You will see ceramics, coins, and metalwork from the Greek colonial period alongside architectural fragments from the sanctuary at Capo Colonna. The museum does a good job of explaining Kroton's peculiar obsession with athletic excellence — the city produced a remarkable concentration of Olympic champions, including the sprinter Astylus and the wrestler Milon of Croton, who won six successive Olympic titles. Several exhibits are devoted to the Pythagorean school, which was based in Kroton and shaped the intellectual life of the ancient Mediterranean world.
