Civitavecchia's cathedral was built in the 18th century in restrained Baroque style and dedicated to the city's patron, St Francis of Assisi. The interior was extensively damaged during the 1943-44 bombing and rebuilt in a fairly austere style; some original stuccowork and a few altarpieces survive. The exterior is unprepossessing — the building sits awkwardly across from a car park, the surrounding piazza only partly recovered from the war.
A quick stop, fifteen minutes, mainly for a sense of the diocesan history rather than great art. The cathedral is part of the joint diocese with Tarquinia.
