Unconditional Surrender (Embracing Peace)

A 25-foot painted statue by Seward Johnson on Civitavecchia's harbour-front, depicting a US sailor in a long kiss with a nurse in nurse's whites — a three-dimensional recreation of the famous 1945 V-J Day photograph from Times Square. Civitavecchia, which was heavily bombed and then liberated by the Allies in 1944, adopted the statue as a permanent gift after a temporary exhibition.

It is large, colourful, and unmissable on the seafront walk between the cruise terminal and the historic centre. Tourist-photo bait, but also a small reminder that the town's modern layout exists because the medieval one was destroyed. Free; on the public promenade.

A story
The statue is one of several monumental versions of the same image around the world — the others in San Diego, Sarasota, and Pearl Harbor. It recreates the famous V-J Day photograph by Alfred Eisenstaedt of an unidentified sailor kissing a nurse in Times Square on 14 August 1945. The 8-metre Civitavecchia version arrived in 2005 and stands on the harbour-front near where, in 1943, Allied bombs flattened most of the city.
