Piazza Leandra

The most atmospheric corner of the old town, Piazza Leandra is a small irregular medieval square uphill from the port, with a fountain at the centre and the Baroque Church of the Stella to one side. The Stella houses the "Sacri Misteri" — wooden statues of the Passion that are carried in procession through the streets on Good Friday, one of Civitavecchia's most important traditional events.

The square is approached through a narrow archway (l'archetto) from the old town side. The surrounding lanes — Via San Pietro, Via Aurelia Antica — are some of the few stretches of pre-1943 Civitavecchia that survived the war. Worth a half-hour stroll.
