The main square of the upper town is a long, narrow piazza closed at one end by the cathedral and lined with the palazzi of the families that once governed Orte. It is the natural meeting point of the centro storico and the starting point for the underground tunnel tours.
In the evenings the piazza fills with the predictable mix of teenagers, dog-walkers, and old men talking politics that you find in every small Italian town. There are a couple of cafes under the arcades on the cathedral side, both fine for an aperitivo before walking the medieval streets at dusk.
