Town Walls and Panoramic Belvederes

Most of Orte's medieval walls survive, wrapping the upper town around the rim of the tufa cliff. Several stretches have been turned into panoramic walkways, and from the belvederes on the eastern and southern flanks the Tiber valley opens up below — vineyards and olive groves giving way to the wooded ridges of the Umbrian foothills.

The northern terrace, just below Porta San Cesareo, is the best at sunset. There is a paved path that loops most of the way around the town along the wall, and the full circuit takes about forty minutes at a slow pace.
