Cathedral of San Michele Arcangelo

Medieval cathedral with a spectacular Gothic bell tower in the heart of the old town

The Cathedral of San Michele Arcangelo dominates Piazza San Michele, the main square of Albenga's medieval centre. A church has stood on this site since the turn of the 4th and 5th centuries, though the current structure is largely medieval — the main body was rebuilt around 1100 and again substantially in the second half of the 12th century, with a major restoration in the 1960s aimed at recovering the medieval appearance.

The bell tower is the cathedral's standout feature: five stories of mullioned windows in Late Gothic style, climbing above the surrounding rooftops and visible from much of the town. Inside, three naves are separated by original columns and pillars with ogival arches. The apse retains 15th-century frescoes. The cathedral houses relics of Saint Veranus, credited with bringing Christianity to Albenga in the 6th century and venerated as the town's patron.

A story
The cathedral's bell tower was rebuilt in the 1390s after earthquake damage, and the work introduced one of the most ambitious late-Gothic campaniles in Liguria: five tiers of arched windows that multiply as they rise, culminating in a polygonal cusp. A church on this spot has existed since the 5th century, making it contemporary with the baptistery standing a few metres away.
