About ten medieval tower-houses survive in the historic centre, built by the powerful families — Costa, D'Aste, Lengueglia, Cepolla, Ricci, Rolandi, and Oddi — who dominated Albenga through the Middle Ages. The street plan of the old town has not changed since medieval times, and the towers rise above a tight grid of narrow lanes. The Piazza dei Leoni, named for three stone lions brought from Rome, is the centre of civic life.
