Genoa's bar culture is best experienced in the caruggi — the old city's narrow lanes fill with aperitivo crowds from around 6pm. The city has a serious coffee tradition too; locals take their espresso standing at the bar and move on. After midnight, the action shifts towards the Piazza delle Erbe area, which draws a younger crowd to its cluster of bars and live music venues.
