Genoa sits at the midpoint of the Ligurian coast, making it a strong base for day trips in both directions. Portofino is 35km east — take the ferry from the old port for the best approach. The Cinque Terre villages are an hour by train. Going west, Finale Ligure has excellent limestone climbing and a good beach. Inland, the medieval villages of the Ligurian hinterland are almost entirely unvisited by tourists.
