Castelletto is the hillside neighbourhood that rises above the old city to the north, reached by funicular from Piazza del Portello (a short walk from Via Garibaldi). At the top, the Belvedere Montaldo terrace gives one of the best views in Genoa: the red-roofed old city below, the port behind it, and the hills stretching away on both sides.
The neighbourhood itself is pleasant to wander — quieter than the old city, with good local cafes and fewer tourists. The funicular runs until around midnight, so the belvedere is also an excellent spot for evening views over the lit city and port. A second ascensore (lift) system links Castelletto to the street below via a different route.
