Unité d'Habitation (Le Corbusier)

Le Corbusier's only Italian building, an ambitious social housing block in Quezzi

Genoa has the only Le Corbusier building in Italy: the Unité d'Habitation in the Quezzi district, built between 1963 and 1965. One of five such blocks built in different European cities, the Genoese version is the least well-known and the least maintained, which makes it more interesting in some ways than the better-preserved Marseille original.

The building is a functioning apartment block, not a museum. The ground-floor pilotis (supporting legs), the roof terrace, and the characteristic brise-soleil balconies are all visible from outside. Architecture enthusiasts make the trip to Quezzi specifically to see it — take bus 14 from the city centre.
