Emanuele Luzzati (1921–2007) was one of Italy's great illustrators and set designers, born in Genoa and celebrated for his work in animated film, theatre, and children's books. His style — vivid colours, naive figures, a sense of Chagall-like dreaminess — is immediately recognisable, and his legacy in Genoa is considerable: his murals appear on buildings around the old port.
The museum, installed in a medieval tower at Porta Siberia on the old port, holds drawings, maquettes, costumes, and film footage illustrating his long career. It is a small museum, quickly visited, but surprisingly moving — Luzzati's work has a warmth and generosity that comes through clearly in the originals.
