The museum of medieval and baroque sculpture occupies the cloister and church of the former Augustinian convent of Sant'Agostino, a Gothic complex dating from the 13th century. The collection is focused on stone: architectural fragments, sarcophagi, capitals, and decorative elements saved from the demolitions and reconfigurations of Genoa's many churches over the centuries.
The highlight is a marble fragment known as the Margherita di Brabante — part of a funerary monument by Giovanni Pisano commissioned in 1313, representing one of the finest pieces of Gothic sculpture in Italy. The building itself, with its distinctive striped campanile, is worth visiting even without an interest in the collection.
