The bell tower of Santa Maria delle Vigne is one of the landmarks of the old city skyline, rising above the surrounding buildings in a neighbourhood of narrow lanes. The church occupies the site of an early Christian basilica and has been rebuilt several times; the current exterior dates largely from the 17th century, with a striped marble campanile from an earlier period.
The interior is full and rich in the Genoese Baroque manner: side chapels with paintings by local masters, a richly decorated organ loft, and marble floors worn smooth by centuries of use. The church is still actively used for services and is open to visitors throughout the day.
