Cristo Re dei Secoli

Bold modernist cathedral with striking circular design

La Spezia's cathedral, also known as Christ the King of Centuries, was designed by Adalberto Libera and completed in the 1970s. The bold modernist design stands in striking contrast to the city's nineteenth-century architecture, with a distinctive circular plan and clean concrete lines. The exterior reads as a series of curved concrete forms crowned by a slender campanile.

The interior is surprisingly warm: light enters through glazed sections around the drum of the building, and the circular plan draws the eye toward the high altar at the centre. Worth a visit even if you don't normally seek out modern churches — it's a serious work of architecture in a city not always associated with design.

A story
The architect Adalberto Libera designed this cathedral after completing the Palazzo dei Congressi in Rome for the 1942 World's Fair. The La Spezia commission was his final major work — he died in 1963 before it was finished, and the building was completed posthumously and consecrated in 1975.
