Piazza della Vittoria and the Waterfront Promenade

Piazza della Vittoria, at the northern end of the Corso Umberto I, is the formal centre of modern Brindisi: a broad open square flanked by the Palazzo del Governo and bounded by the start of the waterfront promenade. The square itself is somewhat grandiose — more Fascist civic planning than medieval piazza — but the promenade that begins here and extends around the harbour is genuinely pleasant.

The walk takes in the fish market, the ferry ticket offices, the Roman column steps, and eventually reaches the park around the Monumento al Marinaio. It takes about 20 minutes at a stroll, more if you stop to watch boats. In the evening the promenade fills with families, and the gelato kiosks that appear in spring do a brisk trade until well after dark.
