Brindisi's compact historic centre holds more interest than most transit passengers realise. The Roman column on the waterfront is the city's calling card, but the cluster of Norman and Romanesque churches within a few minutes' walk are equally rewarding. The harbour itself — a deep natural inlet shaped like deer antlers, which gave the city its name in Greek — is a constant presence.
