Gola Su Gorropu

A dramatic limestone canyon on the edge of the Supramonte plateau, southeast of Dorgali and accessed from the Flumineddu river valley. The walls rise sheer from the canyon floor, closing to a few metres in the tightest section, with polished rock faces worn smooth by centuries of floodwater. The approach takes about two hours on foot from the road; the canyon interior can be explored for another hour before technical climbing gear becomes necessary.

The hike is not technically demanding but involves some boulder scrambling and requires the river to be low. A local guide is useful for route-finding and safety, particularly if you want to go deeper into the gorge. Several outfitters based in Dorgali and Cala Gonone offer guided trips. The canyon is often cited as one of the most impressive natural features in western Europe.

A story
Su Gorropu's walls reach 500 metres in height and close to less than four metres apart in the narrowest section. Local shepherds called it "the jaws of hell." In winter and spring, the canyon floor floods completely — it can only be entered on foot when the Flumineddu river drops enough to allow passage, usually from late May to October.
