One of the most atmospheric archaeological sites on Sardinia: a Bronze Age Nuragic village built inside a vast natural cave formed by the collapse of a karst dome on the flanks of Monte Tiscali. The village occupies the floor of the collapsed chamber, sheltered by the surviving cave walls above, with shafts of daylight falling through the open top. Round stone huts, now mostly reduced to foundations, are arranged across the floor.
Getting here requires a two-hour walk through the Lanaittu valley — a gorge of limestone cliffs and scrub oak that is itself worth the trip. The path is marked but involves some scrambling. Sturdy footwear and water are essential. The site is remote enough that you are likely to have it almost to yourself outside summer weekends.
