Fontana di Orione

Sixteenth-century marble fountain in Piazza del Duomo, celebrating Messina's mythical founder.

Fontana di Orione stands in Piazza del Duomo, close to Messina Cathedral, and is one of the city's strongest surviving Renaissance details. Giovanni Angelo Montorsoli, a pupil of Michelangelo, designed the fountain in the 16th century, with Orion at the centre and river figures below.

The fountain is not a long visit, but it sharpens the cathedral square. Messina has been rebuilt so often that older fragments matter, and this one gives the city centre a touch of marble confidence amid the busier business of ferries, traffic, and post-earthquake streets.
