Teatro Vittorio Emanuele II is Messina's main historic theatre and one of the city's more dignified nineteenth-century survivors. From outside it has a measured neoclassical face, but the richer reward is inside, where the auditorium and painted ceiling restore some of the grandeur Messina lost in earthquakes and rebuilding.
It is worth checking the programme even if you are not planning a formal night out. Concerts, opera, dance, and theatre can turn a quick sightseeing stop into a proper evening, and guided access is sometimes possible around performances. The theatre sits close to the centre, so it combines easily with the cathedral and waterfront.
