Sacrario di Cristo Re stands above central Messina, a memorial church whose dome and tower are visible from many parts of the city. Its position is the main reason to climb up: the view takes in the port, the tight urban grid, and the Strait of Messina.
The building also carries a solemn role as a war memorial, so it is more than a scenic lookout. Visit it for both the panorama and the sense of how Messina rebuilt and remembered itself after earthquakes, war, and repeated upheaval.
