Palazzina Cinese

The Palazzina Cinese is a small ornate pavilion in the Parco della Favorita, the royal park spreading north from the city under the slopes of Monte Pellegrino. The exterior is a fantasia of pagoda roofs, ironwork balconies, and trompe l'oeil painting; the interior is a sequence of small rooms decorated by Giuseppe Patania and Vincenzo Riolo in Egyptian, Chinese, and Pompeian styles.

The neighbouring Museo Etnografico Pitré, set up in the early 20th century to preserve Sicilian folk culture, has costumes, painted carts, and ex-votos. Both sites are usually combined as a single visit. Bus 806 from the city centre. Reduced opening times outside the high season.

A story
Ferdinand III, exiled from Naples in 1799 and again from 1806 by Napoleonic forces, retreated to Palermo with Maria Carolina and his court. The Palazzina Cinese was built in 1799 as their summer pavilion in the royal park, fitted out with chinoiserie because that was the European fashion of the moment. It was the favoured palace of both monarchs for the better part of two decades.
