Palermo's bar culture is anchored by the granita — a coarser, more intensely flavoured version of the iced drink, often eaten for breakfast with a brioche col tuppo. Coffee is taken seriously: espresso is short and strong, and the local habit of drinking it standing at the bar is genuine rather than affected. In the evening the Vucciria market area and the streets around Piazza Olivella fill with aperitivo bars; the scene is loud, cheap, and very local.
