Monreale is the essential day trip, just 8km from Palermo by city bus. The Norman cathedral there has some of the most spectacular Byzantine mosaics in the world. Cefalu on the north coast is an easy train ride away and makes for a lovely day by the sea. For something more adventurous, Erice is a medieval hilltop village above Trapani with sweeping coastal views.
