The Arco dell'Elefante on the south-eastern coast is the island's most photographed natural feature: a hump of black lava that thrusts out into the sea exactly in the shape of an elephant dipping its trunk into the water. It is best seen from the small road that climbs above it on the way to Punta Karuscia, or from the water by boat.
Below the arch a narrow stony beach — Cala dell'Elefante — has steps cut down to the sea and is one of the few easy swimming spots on this stretch of coast. The water is exceptionally clear, and the basalt drops away quickly into a sheer underwater wall, which makes for excellent snorkelling.
