Bagno Asciutto

Bagno Asciutto — the "dry bath" — is a natural sauna in a partially enclosed cleft in the volcanic rock on the slopes of Montagna Grande. Hot vapour rises from a fumarole in the floor of the cave, and the temperature inside hovers between 35 and 40°C. Pantesi use it for traditional cures for arthritis and respiratory complaints, and it is free and open at all hours.

The walk in is a short scramble up from a small parking lay-by signed off the road towards Sibà. Take a towel, a bottle of water and a flashlight — the inner chamber is dark and the path is uneven. Twenty minutes inside is plenty for a first visit.
