Chiesa di Santa Lucia al Sepolcro stands outside the old walls of Siracusa, on the traditional site of Saint Lucy's martyrdom. The present church is mostly 15th- and 16th-century, though older parts survive in the portal, apses, and lower belfry.
The church is closely tied to the cult of Saint Lucy and to Caravaggio's Burial of Saint Lucy, which was painted for this setting. The tomb of the saint is beside the church; the catacombs below are not normally open to visitors.
