When to Go

Trapani has a typical Mediterranean climate, hot and dry in summer, mild in winter. The best seasons to visit are spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October), when temperatures are comfortable and the light on the salt pans is beautiful.

Easter is the major event: the Misteri di Trapani procession on Good Friday is one of the finest Holy Week observances in Sicily. Twenty wooden sculptural groups, each carried by a confraternity, are borne through the city in an all-night procession that begins on Good Friday morning and continues until Saturday. The figures are extraordinary works of art, and the atmosphere of the procession — torches, incense, slow rhythmic movement through the old streets — is unforgettable. Book accommodation well in advance for Easter week.

Summer (July–August) is hot (30–36°C), crowded with Sicilian holidaymakers heading for the beaches and the Egadi Islands, and very good for swimming. The sea around the Egadi Islands is some of the clearest in the Mediterranean.
