Things to Do

The old town is the main event: walk the central axis from the baroque Cathedral of San Lorenzo and Palazzo Senatorio out to the tip of the peninsula where the Ligny Tower museum stands. The Castello della Colombaia guards the entrance to the harbour from its offshore islet. The Santuario dell'Annunziata contains the famous Madonna of Trapani statue and is worth visiting even if religious art isn't usually your interest. The Museo Pepoli in the former Carmelite convent beside the sanctuary has the best collection of local art and craft in the province, including superb coral work for which Trapani was once famous throughout the Mediterranean. Outside the city, the salt pans (Saline di Trapani) are a beautiful and unusual landscape best visited around sunset.
