Forte dei Marmi is well placed for a range of day trips into the surrounding landscape. The marble quarries of Carrara are the most dramatic: the white-scarred mountains are visible from the beach, and the quarry road above town leads to working sites where stone has been extracted since Roman times. Pietrasanta (6 km inland) is an easy bicycle excursion — a beautiful medieval town that has become a centre for contemporary sculpture. The Cinque Terre fishing villages are about 60 km north along the coast, easily reached by train or car. Lucca, a perfectly preserved walled Renaissance city, is under an hour by car. Pisa with its famous leaning tower is about 40 km south.
