Pietrasanta

The inland hill town of Pietrasanta, just 6 km from Forte dei Marmi, is one of the most rewarding places in this part of Tuscany and a sharp contrast to the beach resort atmosphere of the coast. Long a centre for marble working and bronze casting, it has become a gathering point for sculptors and contemporary artists from around the world — Botero, Mitoraj, and many others have worked here and left permanent pieces in the streets and squares. The main Piazza del Duomo is anchored by the 14th-century Duomo di San Martino and the former convent of Sant'Agostino, now an exhibition space. A good day trip on foot or by bicycle; the road from Forte dei Marmi is flat and the cycle path is pleasant.
