Palazzo Pfanner

Palazzo Pfanner is the finest private palace in Lucca and one of the most beautiful in Tuscany — an 18th-century aristocratic residence whose formal garden is the only significant historic garden within the city walls. The garden is laid out in Italian baroque style, with a central fountain, a long central axis of lemon trees in terracotta pots, and baroque statues of Greek gods and the Seasons placed among the hedged compartments.

The palace takes its name from the Swiss brewer Felix Pfanner, who bought it in 1860 and used the cellars for his brewery. The interior rooms have fine painted ceilings and period furnishings. The upper floor of the palace and the garden are open to visitors; the best way to see the garden is actually from the city walls above, which provide an elevated view over the whole layout.
