Teatro del Giglio is Lucca's historic opera house, a handsome neoclassical theatre dating from the early 19th century that stands on Piazza del Giglio. The theatre has strong Puccini associations — the composer attended performances here as a young man, and several of his early works received performances in this house. The interior, with its tiered loges and gilded ceiling, is a good example of the Italian operatic theatre tradition.
The theatre runs a regular programme of opera and concerts, mainly in the spring and autumn seasons. If there is a performance during your visit, attending is strongly recommended — the theatre is not large, and there is no bad seat in the house.
