Pisa's main shopping street, an arcaded medieval thoroughfare running north from the river to Piazza dei Cavalieri. The arcades on both sides shelter cafés, bookshops, and the kind of well-aged Tuscan dry goods shops that have been in the same family for four generations.
Walk it slowly. The church of San Michele in Borgo, halfway up, has a remarkable 14th-century facade reusing Roman columns. Caffè dell'Ussero, two doors south on the river, has been open since 1775 and was the favourite of Italian Risorgimento patriots — Giuseppe Mazzini and Giuseppe Giusti both drank here. Stop for an espresso at the marble counter.
