Santa Caterina d'Alessandria

Address Piazza Santa Caterina, 56127 Pisa

A handsome 13th-century Gothic Dominican church on a quiet square halfway between the Campo dei Miracoli and the river. The marble facade, with its three tiers of small arcades and rose window, is one of the most photographed in the city after the cathedral — fewer visitors stop here than should.

Inside, the highlights are Nino Pisano's marble Annunciation (1360) flanking the high altar and a Glory of Saint Thomas Aquinas painted by Francesco Traini around 1340, showing the saint with his books open over the heads of Plato, Aristotle, and a defeated Averroes. The church is usually open during the day and rarely crowded.
