Palazzo dell'Orologio

Palazzo dell'Orologio frames one side of Piazza dei Cavalieri, with an arched passage below and a clock set into the facade above. The present 14th-century building replaced the Torre della Fame, the "tower of hunger" associated with Count Ugolino della Gherardesca.

Dante placed Ugolino's grim death in the Divine Comedy, which gives this elegant square a darker edge. It is best seen as part of a walk around Piazza dei Cavalieri rather than as a separate destination.
