Stadio Olimpico del Ghiaccio

The Olympic Ice Stadium was built for the 1956 Winter Olympics and remains in use today — a rare survivor of that era in reasonable condition. It hosted the figure skating and ice hockey events in 1956, and has been updated for the 2026 Winter Olympics. The facility includes two ice rinks and is open to the public for skating during winter, making it one of the few Olympic venues where visitors can actually participate rather than just observe. The surrounding park area is pleasant for a walk even when skating is not available.

A story
When Cortina hosted the 1956 Winter Olympics, the opening ceremony was held in a snowstorm so heavy that spectators could barely see the athletes. The Italians considered it a good omen. They were right: Italy finished fourth in the medal table, their best Winter Olympics result at that point.
