Tofane

The Tofane massif is the dominant mountain group west of Cortina, comprising three summits — Tofana di Rozes (3,225 m), Tofana di Mezzo (3,244 m), and Tofana di Dentro (3,238 m). They form the backdrop against which most photographs of Cortina are taken, and the ski area on their flanks is the largest and most varied of the resort's sectors. The cable car to Ra Valles and the slopes below Tofana di Mezzo are the heart of Cortina's winter skiing.

In summer, the Tofane offer serious mountaineering routes and the famous Via Ferrata Lipella on Tofana di Rozes — a long, demanding ferrata with extraordinary views across the Dolomites. The Rifugio Duca d'Aosta at 2,265 metres is a reasonable day-hike from the road, and cable car access makes the upper slopes reachable without serious mountaineering. At sunset the vertical south face of Tofana di Rozes is among the finest examples of enrosadira in the Dolomites.
