The city centre is compact and walkable. For Karosta — about 4 kilometres north of the centre — the city's single tram line runs directly there, a connection that has existed since the tram system was built for the naval base workers in the early 20th century. The tram is cheap and runs frequently enough to be useful.
Taxis are available but rarely necessary for most visitor itineraries. Cycling is pleasant in good weather — the flat terrain and dedicated cycle paths along the beach make it well suited for bikes. Several operators in the centre offer rentals.
