When to Go

Summer (June to August) is the obvious time for the beach and outdoor activities. The days are long, temperatures reach 20–25 degrees Celsius on good days, and the city runs music festivals including Liepāja Rocks — a rock festival that draws on the city's long tradition as Latvia's rock music capital. The Liepāja International Piano Stars Festival brings classical musicians in summer as well.

Spring and autumn are quieter but perfectly comfortable for the main sights. Karosta, the lighthouse, and the Holy Trinity Cathedral organ are all fully enjoyable in any weather — arguably more atmospheric in autumn fog. Winter is cold, with occasional snow and dramatic Baltic storms that make the beach and coast genuinely photogenic.
