Liepāja City Beach

Liepāja's city beach is wide, backed by dunes, and stretches for several kilometres along the Baltic coast. It is a serious beach by northern European standards: Blue Flag certified for water quality, well maintained, and lined with pine trees that break the wind on cooler days. In summer the water temperature reaches 18–22 degrees Celsius, which is comfortable enough for swimming by Baltic norms.

The beach is within easy walking distance from the city centre and draws a genuine local crowd rather than mainly tourists. Beach volleyball courts, rental equipment, and seasonal cafes appear in summer. The dunes behind the beach are worth exploring on foot — they are protected and relatively undeveloped, with good views from the higher crests. In winter the beach is all but empty and fully dramatic, with crashing grey waves and a wind that cuts through even heavy coats.

A story
The beach was awarded the Blue Flag — the international certification for water quality, safety, and environmental management — a distinction that surprised many who assumed Baltic beaches couldn't compete with southern European standards. The water is cold by Mediterranean standards but genuinely clean.
