Liepāja Theatre

The Liepāja Theatre is one of the most distinguished buildings in the city — a handsome Art Nouveau structure built in 1903, when Liepāja was still the Latvian Libau and one of the most important ports on the eastern Baltic. The theatre has operated continuously, through German occupation, Soviet rule, and independence, and its main auditorium is still considered one of the finest theatre spaces in Latvia.

Performances are in Latvian, which limits accessibility for most foreign visitors, but the building itself is worth seeing from the outside at minimum. The foyer and stalls can sometimes be visited outside performance hours — ask at the box office. The theatre sits on a pleasant square in the city centre, surrounded by some of the better-preserved 19th- and early-20th-century architecture in Liepāja.
